How to optimise your blogger template in 4 (four) easy steps

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) necessary for higher search engine ranking is not inherently built into the blogger.com blog template as it is for Wordpress users. However, a lot has been written about optimising the blogger template for search engines.

It is however important to understand the basic principle of SEO, is that keywords, must appear closer to the top of your contents. Blog title, and topic/post titles, tags, etc should as much as possible have keywords in them. These are the basics of SEO.

Search engines rank keywords from left to right, and there is a limit to number of characters that can appear in a search listing for a site/page. This implies that it is necessary for the title of contents to appear before the site title. In blogger, that is not the case. The default for the blogger template is: blog title before post title. Turning the other way round will greatly increase your page rank. Below is an easy do-it-yourself way of correcting that, and increasing your chance of better search engine traffic.

You should download a copy for your current template as backup, in case you make any mistake.

Go to your Blogger dashboard, click LAYOUT, and then click EDIT HTML.

Step 2
Locate this:

It should be within the first 5-10 lines of code in your template from the top, if you have not modified your code previously.

Step 3
Replace line of code with the following:

Step 4
Save your template and view your blog. Click into any post and look at the page title. You will notice that your post title now appear before your blog title.

This makes it easier for search engines to crawl your content for those important search keywords.
